Texting 911 in Washington State
When it does become available, you will be able to call 911 in an emergency, or you will be able to text. Note that if you try to text 911 before this program is supported in your area, you will receive a “bounce-back message” letting you know that your message wasn’t received.
You should know that this feature only works if your phone and carrier plan allows text messaging. This isn’t the case with calling 911: all cell phones can make emergency calls, regardless of whether or not you have a plan.
So why would you want to text 911 instead of call? This program will be extremely useful to people who are deaf or hard of hearing or have speech impediments—all of which could make it difficult to communicate with a 911 dispatcher. It will also be helpful for people who would be putting themselves in danger if they made noise.
